A la QVC style – post host Lisa Robertson days – where it seems every Q hosts have their own show – the same is now rolling out over at HSN
This weekend, HSN began announcing these new shows during promos:
- Friday Night Show with Amy and Adam
- Gardening with Guy Yovan
- Saturday Blend with Lesley & Brett
- Sunday Fashion Edit with Callie Northagen
- Lunch Rush with Michelle Yarn
- Good Eating with Marlo Smith
- Your Kitchen with Shannon Smith
A couple of shows like this can be fun, especially for the most popular 3 hosts; but overall, I’m not fond of this concept which is why I’ve been watching HSN more than QVC in recent years.
For me, as a customer, when nearly every host have their own show, it can feel like an unending parade of Hollywood talk shows with the programs and products revolving around the hosts’ personalities and moods (oh the highs and lows!) and that’s how shopping channels can lose their brand identity and brand personality.
I used to categorized the channels like this:
- QVC = Calm, classy, soft sell style (no longer true, IMO)
- HSN = Energetic, hipper, fun style (credits to their former CEO Mindy Grossman but that’s changing)
- Evine (originally ShopNBC) = Luxury shopping (overall, still is)
And that’s how I chose which channel to watch.
Now a days, I can’t rely on that anymore.
Instead, I’ll have to check their program guides to see which host is on before tuning in
That’s like saying… I can’t just walk into any Tory Burch store and expect the same Tory Burch “atmosphere” unless I call ahead to inquire of their sales associates’ schedule because my shopping experience will be very different depending on who’s working
In any case, this looks like yet another change coming out of the QVC HSN acquisition
They’re going to be identical twins soon
February 24, 2019 at 8:29 pm EST #332932These 3 shows have been around for years:
- The List with Colleen Lopez (5/2014)
- Beauty Report with Amy Morrison (not sure when the show began but its original host was Diana Perkovic)
- Monday Night Show with Adam (10/2014)
February 25, 2019 at 8:02 am EST #332957It’s also a risk for them because while they’re emphasizing the “personal” connection with the host, which they think will keep you coming back, they’re also tying a lot of what you think of them and their brand to what you think of the host.
For some viewers, this is why they tune in. They like this person or that person, and it feels like a friend is talking. (It’s not, though. This is all business.)
It’s not how I shop though. I may like Colleen’s The List, or Jay King’s Mine Finds, but for the most part, I shop online.

February 26, 2019 at 5:49 pm EST #333001Ironically, I started watching the shopping channels a million years ago because they were a source of consistency and calm (and fun, of course)
Now it is so chaotic with non-stop changes. It’s giving me motion sickness
February 26, 2019 at 5:57 pm EST #333004Ironic for sure. Used to be—oh, it’s Thursday, Shoe Shopping With Jane tonight. Not any more. I don’t understand the reason for the changes and uncertainty.
